By the 1870s, photography (invented forty years earlier) had matured into a wide diversity of hobby and business activities. Professional photographers, equipped with the finest quality cameras, were able to take remarkably clear, sharp pictures and reproduce them as prints, glass ‘magic lantern’ projection slides and stereographs (3D images). Henry Taunt, one of our finest Victorian photographers, was and still is, highly regarded for his beautifully composed views of the River Thames. As well as taking portrait and scenic photographs, Henry sold, from his shop in Oxford, guide books for tourists, which he wrote and illustrated himself. This 34 page booklet reproduces one of his guides, in which he travels by train to Lechlade with his canoe, paddles upstream to Inglesham Round House, then downstream to Oxford. I have supplemented his text, illustrations and maps with 18 photographs from lantern slides that date from the 1880s, with the exception of those of St. Giles’ Fair, which were probably taken in the early 1900s. The guide book and photographs complement each other and enable us to take a canoe trip down the River Thames in 1875. PLEASE NOTE that the print size in this booklet is smaller than in my other titles. You can use the 'look inside' facility to see it before you buy. Legacy Report - Mt Zion Historical Society 1.
